LIFE AT CAMP

BASIC STUFF ABOUT CHESTNUT

Chestnut Lake Camp is where tradition meets purpose — a community built on friendship, growth, and shared experiences. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Pocono Mountains, CLC blends the spirit of adventure with the feeling of family. This section introduces what Chestnut Lake is all about—our location, what makes us unique, and the philosophy that guides everything we do.

Where is Chestnut Lake Camp located?
Chestnut Lake Camp is located in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania, in the heart of Wayne County, part of the Pocono Mountains that sit in the northeastern part of the state. We’re just a few hours from New York City and Philadelphia, surrounded by lakes, rolling hills, and the kind of scenery that makes summer here truly special.

What makes Chestnut Lake Camp unique?
Chestnut Lake is big enough to offer exceptional programs, facilities, and opportunities, but small enough to feel like family. Every camper and staff member is known by name, and our values-driven community creates an experience that lasts long after summer ends. It’s a place of connection, growth, and joy — where every day has purpose and every person matters.

What is the philosophy of Chestnut Lake Camp?
Our philosophy centers on respect, belonging, and character. We believe in helping everyone — campers and staff alike — to Bring Out Their Best. Through shared experiences, teamwork, and care for others, we build a community defined by growth, kindness, and authentic relationships. That’s the heart of CLC, and it’s what makes it feel like it’s always summer.

LIVING AT CAMP

Life at Chestnut Lake Camp is built around community, connection, and purpose. Our staff live and work together in a close-knit environment where everyone plays a vital role in creating an unforgettable summer for campers. Camp life is fast-paced and full, but it’s also grounded in teamwork, rhythm, and moments of absolute joy, from morning lineups to campfires under the stars.

This section covers the essentials of living at CLC (from housing, meals, and laundry to everyday comforts) so you’ll know what to expect from your home away from home.

What is the staff living situation like?
All General Counselors and Specialty Counselors live in cabins with campers. Depending on your role, you’ll be placed on one of our three campuses: Girls Campus (3rd through 8th grade girls), Boys Campus (3rd through 8th grade boys), or Varsity Campus (9th through 11th grade girls and boys).

Support staff and leadership team members live in staff-only housing. All living spaces are comfortable, simple, and equipped with the essentials you’ll need.

Where will I be living at CLC?
If you’re a counselor, you’ll live in a camper cabin, sharing the space with co-counselors and your assigned campers. Support and leadership staff live in shared staff housing on or near campuses. Housing assignments are determined before camp based on your position and division, and you’ll receive your specific placement before or upon arrival.

How are meals and snacks provided?
Meals are served in the Dining Hall, where we combine family-style and buffet-style service. You’ll enjoy three hearty meals a day, plus afternoon and evening snacks, with plenty of options, including vegetarian, allergy-friendly, and balanced choices. A full salad bar is open during lunch and dinner.

Outside of meals, where can I get snacks or extra food?
Snacks are served during our designated daily “Moo Call” in the afternoon, a time for everyone to recharge a little with an afternoon treat. In addition, fresh fruit is available in the Dining Hall to grab during breaks, and each campus office typically has some assorted snacks to enjoy when energy gets especially low.

Outside food may not be brought into cabins or staff housing, but don’t worry: you’ll never go hungry here. Coffee, tea, and cold brew (with flavored syrups!) are available in the Dining Hall, and memorable moments like Candy Canteen Days and Staff Snack Nights offer extra sweet and savory treats all summer long.

How does the laundry system work?
Laundry is collected once each week, washed by an outside service, and returned clean. Every staff member receives a labeled laundry bag, and fresh towels are provided daily. Clothes are not folded, so plan to organize and store them when returned. You’ll get full instructions during orientation/training, and we recommend packing enough clothing to last between laundry pickups.

What should I wear during the day and for camp activities?
All staff wear a CLC uniform: primarily camp T-shirts and a sweatshirt for cooler days. You’ll receive multiple shirts and gear at the start of the summer (and more throughout the season). Staff wear uniform items daily from breakfast through late afternoon/early evening (usually up to dinner). After that, you can change into casual, appropriate clothing for the evening. You’ll also enjoy special themed days (like Jersey Day or Pink Wednesday), announced in advance so you can plan and pack accordingly.

Is there a gym or fitness area?
Yes! Our fitness area in the Hockey Arena is available to staff during designated times. In addition, staff are encouraged to join pickup games, evening sports, and recreational activities, which are great ways to stay active, unwind, and connect with others.

Can I send or receive packages at camp?
Yes! Staff can send and receive mail and packages during the summer. You’ll receive the mailing address before camp begins so friends and family can stay in touch.

How does mail work for staff?
Mail is distributed daily and can be picked up during scheduled times. Outgoing mail can be left at the office or staff mail area for pickup and delivery.
