EXPECTATIONS & GUIDELINES
At Chestnut Lake, our staff set the tone for the entire camp community. This section outlines the responsibilities, policies, safety standards, dress code, and expectations that help create a positive, supportive, and safe environment for everyone.
By modeling respect, enthusiasm, and care, you help shape a culture where every camper — and every staff member — feels valued and inspired to bring out their best. The following questions highlight what it means to lead with purpose and professionalism at CLC — how we support our campers, care for one another, and uphold the standards that make Chestnut Lake a place where everyone can thrive.
GETTING READY FOR THE SUMMER
What is the weather like at camp?
The weather in Beach Lake is usually warm and sunny during the day — typically in the upper 70s to mid-80s°F — and comfortably cool at night. Summer showers and the occasional thunderstorm are part of camp life, so be sure to pack a light jacket, sweatshirt, and reliable rain gear to stay comfortable no matter the forecast.
What should I pack for the summer?
Bring what helps you feel organized, comfortable, and ready for camp life. Along with basic clothing, pack everyday essentials such as toiletries, a waterproof watch, and a reusable water bottle. A few comfort items like photos, a favorite blanket, or something that makes your space feel like home can make a big difference during the summer. You’ll receive a detailed packing list from CLC ahead of time to help you prepare and ensure you have everything you need for a great season.
How can I best prepare for the summer?
Start by completing all required forms, reading the Staff Handbook and Chestnut Essentials, and familiarizing yourself with camp routines. More importantly, come ready to be part of a team that thrives on energy, flexibility, and heart. Camp life moves fast, and no two days are alike. An open mind, a positive attitude, and a good sense of humor will make all the difference.
Can I bring personal items or snacks from home?
You’re welcome to bring a few small things that make your space feel personal, like photos, a cozy pillow, or something that helps you relax at the end of the day. However, outside food and snacks are not permitted. Don’t worry — non-perishable, sealed snacks provided by camp are available at designated snack times throughout the week.

DAILY LIFE & SCHEDULES
What does a typical day for a staff member look like?
Counselors live and work alongside their campers, waking up together, sharing meals, joining activities, and ending each day as a cabin community. During the daily schedule, General Counselors move with their groups from one activity to the next, while Specialty Counselors lead sessions in their specific program areas. Everyone comes together for meals, evening programs, and camp-wide events, creating a rhythm that’s full, purposeful, and deeply rewarding.
What is staff time off like (during the day, evenings, and days off)?
All staff have scheduled breaks throughout the week, including daily rest periods, evenings off, and regular days off. These breaks are built into the schedule to give you time to rest, reset, and take care of yourself so you can bring your best energy to camp each day.
What can I do on my time off?
During your daily rest period, take time to relax and recharge—read, nap, or enjoy a quiet break. On evenings off, staff can unwind in designated recreation areas, join organized staff events, or spend time with friends around camp. A staff calendar is shared each week so you can see what’s planned and take part in activities that fit your schedule and interests. For whole days off, you’ll have opportunities to explore beyond camp. The leadership team helps coordinate group outings to destinations like Philadelphia, New York City, and other nearby spots, giving you the chance to step away, have fun, and return refreshed.
COMMUNICATION & POLICIES
How do I communicate with home while at camp?
Wi-Fi is available in designated staff areas, so you can connect with family and friends during your time off using your personal devices. You’re also welcome to send and receive mail throughout the summer if you’d like to stay in touch the old-fashioned way.
What is the cellphone policy?
Cell phones may only be used in approved staff areas and should never be visible or in use around campers or during scheduled responsibilities. When you’re “on,” stay fully present and engaged—the relationships and focus you bring to camp life are a big part of what makes Chestnut Lake such a special place.
What is the policy on technology use at camp?
At Chestnut Lake, we focus on building genuine connections and being fully present, so we intentionally limit personal technology use during the summer. We encourage staff to bring non-digital essentials, such as an alarm clock, waterproof watch, or camera, to help avoid the need for a cellphone during the day. Lock boxes are available to safely store personal devices, which may be used during designated time off in approved staff areas.
UNDERSTANDING THE JOB
What are my main responsibilities as a staff member?
As a staff member working with campers (as a Counselor), your top priorities are camper safety, well-being, and engagement. You’re expected to act as a positive role model, follow all camp policies, and contribute to the supportive, inclusive spirit that defines Chestnut Lake. If you will be working as a member of our Support Staff, you are playing a vital part in the camp’s operations, and you are expected to learn quickly, apply your skills, and add to the experience for all staff and campers as part of our community.
What standards of conduct are expected at camp?
All staff are expected to maintain professionalism at all times, both on and off duty. This means treating others with respect, using appropriate language, and consistently setting a positive example for campers. Every interaction — whether in the cabin or in your work area, at an activity, or during time off — should reflect the values of care, integrity, and inclusion that define Chestnut Lake. Behavior that compromises safety, respect, or camp values will not be tolerated.
What safety standards should I follow?
Safety is our top priority. All staff are expected to follow supervision guidelines, participate fully in orientation and training, and report any safety concerns immediately. We ask that staff stay alert and aware — notice your surroundings, anticipate potential risks, and look out for one another. Whether at activities, in cabins, in your work area, or during special events, vigilance, communication, and proactive attention help keep everyone safe.
What is the dress code for staff?
Staff are expected to wear appropriate, camp-issued clothing during work hours (usually CLC shirts and gear provided at the start of the summer). Clothing should be neat, modest, and suitable for an active environment. While days can be warm, it’s important to remember that we work closely with children and must set the right example. Bathing suits should be modest, secure, and comfortable for active movement at the pool or lake. Staff shirts are not to be cropped, cut, or altered, and all tops must fully cover the midriff. Shorts should allow for ease of movement while maintaining a professional appearance. After hours, attire remains casual but should still be appropriate for a community setting (something you’d feel comfortable wearing around campers, families, and peers).
How should I handle issues or concerns?
If you have a concern about a camper, another staff member, or any aspect of camp life, communicate promptly and respectfully with your supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team. We encourage open, solution-focused dialogue and believe that most challenges can be resolved through honest conversation and teamwork. You’re never expected to manage a difficult situation on your own; our leadership team is here to listen, support, and help you find the right path forward.
How do I model professionalism at camp?
Professionalism at CLC means showing up on time, being prepared, and bringing your best effort to each day. It also means communicating respectfully, following through on commitments, and staying positive even when things get busy. Remember that every interaction shapes the camper experience, and your attitude helps set the tone for the entire community.
What kind of attitude does Chestnut Lake expect from staff?
Bring a positive, flexible, and team-oriented mindset every day. Camp life can be busy and unpredictable, but with patience, a sense of humor, and genuine enthusiasm, you’ll help create an environment where everyone thrives. We expect all staff to be respectful and kind to everyone in our community — campers, colleagues, and leaders alike — and to value the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives that make Chestnut Lake such a special place to live and work.
